Since theming is always a possibility, we can see why theming and simplification usually go together. Theming narrows the possibilities. Themes discipline places.

Theming restricts a place's natural connectivity down to a narrow channel. A themed place's doubling of self-consciousness subordinates the many modes of self-reference to one dominant obvious self-presentation. A theme focuses the place's constitutive relations onto a single and usually simplified prior identity.
