Tourists skating on the surface

The underlying contradiction of tourism is the need to see beneath the surface when only a surface is available. Lippard 1999, 8

Distrust this duality. There is always surface for the natives, too. Too often "depth" is taken to be when things are forced on people. But if reality includes and celebrates surfaces, then we need to look more carefully at the lives of the tourists beyond their touring, as well as at "the necessities that rule our lives."
